Signs You Need Blocked Stormwater Help

Stormwater problems announce themselves in the rain, and by then the water is already going where it wants. Get ahead of it by acting on these.

  • Water pooling across paving or lawn long after the rain has stopped.
  • A grate or gully that spills over in any decent burst of rain, not just the freak storms.
  • Downpipes that back up and spill from the top instead of draining away.
  • Garden beds or mulch washing across paths whenever a storm rolls through.
  • A pit that stays wet and musty between showers.
  • An outside drain gurgling while the weather is still fine.

If fixtures inside the house are backing up as well, that is a sewer problem rather than stormwater, and it has its own page.

Blocked Stormwater: What We Actually Do

The stormwater side of your drainage only ever carries rain, and it clogs in its own particular ways. Here is what the work covers.

Pits and grates. Clearing silt, leaf litter and debris out of collection pits so they can actually collect.

Downpipe connections. Freeing the junctions where the roof's water drops into the underground line.

Channel and strip drains. Getting driveway and courtyard channels flowing again.

Buried stormwater lines. Jetting the underground run itself when the blockage sits beyond the pit.

Surface flooding call-outs. Working out why water is crossing the yard, and stopping it at the source.

The Factors Behind a Blocked Stormwater Quote

Two blocked pits can be very different jobs once you look below them. What we find under yours sets the price, and these are the levers.

  • How much silt and debris has to come out: a bucketful or a trailer-load.
  • The length of the buried run between the pit and the kerb.
  • Where the line flattens out. On blocks that fall away sharply, packed silt tends to sit at the bottom of the run, and reaching it shapes part of the job.
  • Whether the pipe itself is crushed or cracked, which the camera settles on the spot.
  • Whether you need a one-off clear or a proper end-to-end de-silting.

You approve the price before we start, and looking costs you nothing.

Blocked Stormwater in Waverley Homes

Waverley holds some of the highest ground in the Eastern Suburbs, so its stormwater starts the trip down with plenty of fall. That is mostly good news.

Rain here runs off fast rather than sitting and flooding, which is why local wet-weather trouble tends to be a surcharging pit or gully rather than anything like riverine flooding. The catch is what all that speed carries.

Runs dropping away from streets like Bondi Road move silt and leaf litter downhill with every storm, and it packs hard wherever the gradient eases. The pits and low corners at the bottom carry the load for the whole line, and they are usually where we end up working.

Licensed, Insured and Accountable

Stormwater feels less serious than sewage, but the law treats the pipes the same way. Past clearing your own grate by hand, this is work for a licensed plumber in NSW.

Ours is done under licence #292427C, fully licensed and insured, water and gas. If the camera shows the line needs repair, the same accountability covers that fix too.

Our Blocked Stormwater Process, Start to Finish

A typical pit and grate visit wraps up inside a couple of hours, while jetting a long buried run can fill half a day. The job runs the same way either time.

1. Trace where the water should go. We map the run from the downpipes to the outlet before anything gets opened.

2. Clear it out. Silt, leaves and debris come out of the pits, and we jet the line clean underneath.

3. Check with the camera. If the pipe below is cracked or crushed, you see it yourself and get an honest quote for the fix.

4. Prove the flow. Water goes down the line before we leave, so the next storm is a test you have already passed.

What You Can Safely Try First

Before you call anyone, two checks cost nothing. Lift the leaves off the grate itself, then look into the pit to see whether water is sitting there between storms.

A surface mat of leaves is a two-minute fix any household can manage. If the grate is clear and the water still is not moving, stop there.

Caustic chemicals do nothing for silt, and a hired eel in a stormwater line can crack a pipe that only needed jetting. That is the point where it becomes our job.

The Difference on a Blocked Stormwater Job

Plenty of stormwater clears are a quick scoop of the pit that lasts until the next downpour. With 15+ years' experience on Sydney drains, we check the line the pit feeds as well, so the fix holds when the weather turns.

We would rather not see you every winter. One thorough visit, priced honestly, beats three rushed ones.

Blocked Stormwater Across Waverley and Surrounding Areas

Stormwater trouble rarely travels alone. A CCTV drain inspection shows whether the buried line is damaged, and blocked drain repair fixes what it finds. We work across Waverley and the surrounding suburbs, from Coogee up to Dover Heights.

Good questions, straight answers

Waverley Blocked Stormwater FAQs

Rain-driven drains raise their own questions. Here are the ones we hear most often, answered straight.

Do I need a licensed plumber for a blocked drain?

For anything beyond clearing the grate by hand, yes. Drainage lines are licensed work in NSW, and an unlicensed dig can turn a blockage into a much bigger problem.

Can I try to clear the drain myself first?

Clearing leaves off the grate and scooping out the pit is fair game. Chemicals and hire-shop gear are where DIY goes wrong, so if the water still will not move, call us.

What are the signs of a blocked stormwater drain?

Pooling that outlasts the rain, grates that overflow in ordinary downpours and downpipes spilling from the top are the big three. Any of them means the line is struggling.

Is my home too old for a permanent drain fix?

No. Older stormwater lines can be cleared, repaired or relined like any other, and age mostly changes the method we choose rather than the outcome you get.

Do you put a camera down the drain before you clear it?

On stormwater we often clear the pit first and then camera the buried line, because silt hides everything until it is out. You still see the true condition before any repair is quoted.

Can tree roots be removed from a drain without digging?

Usually. We cut the roots out and jet the line clean, and if the entry point needs sealing, relining sorts it without a trench through the yard.
